In recent years, floating staircases (also known as cantilevered staircases) have become increasingly popular with architects and interior enthusiasts alike. They offer a minimalist, simple staircase solution that also makes a maximum impact in terms of design.
However, one of the main concerns often voiced by our clients is to do with their safety – will children or pets be able to slip through the gaps between treads and how exactly the treads are supported are two questions we get asked on a regular basis. To address these concerns, we’ve compiled this short guide to the safety of floating staircases.
What is a floating staircase?
A floating staircase is a staircase where each tread appears to ‘float’ up the wall, with the support system hidden by being built into the wall. They are typically constructed using
very strong materials such as wood and metal, with optional added details such as glass and balustrades.
Are floating stairs safe?
In short – yes, floating staircases are safe. If you’re concerned about young children or pets slipping between the gaps, there’s a regulation that the gap between the risers or the space between the balustrade cannot be greater than 100mm, meaning the space is too small for a child to get stuck or fall through.
Other elements of stair safety include slip factor, tread strength. and the potential to fall through.
